Continuous venovenous haemofiltration for the treatment of theophylline toxicity.

چکیده
In patients with severe theophylline toxicity charcoal haemoperfusion is the recommended method for rapid reduction of serum theophylline levels. However, access to this technique is limited in most hospitals. This case report shows that continuous venovenous haemofiltration, a technique available in most hospitals, is an effective alternative to charcoal haemoperfusion.

Ammonia detoxification by continuous venovenous haemofiltration in an infant with urea cycle defect.
We report the case of a newborn baby with carbamoyl phosphate synthetase deficiency. He presented at 2 weeks of life, deteriorating to a state of hyperammonaemic coma and respiratory failure. Rapid detoxification was successfully achieved by continuous venovenous haemofiltration while a definitive diagnosis and treatment were determined. The ammonia clearance achieved by continuous venovenous h...
متن کاملSevere theophylline poisoning treated with continuous venovenous hemodialysis in a child.
Theophylline poisoning generally occurs due to acute high dose intake as well as chronic intake of the medication. Toxicity symptoms can be seen with a plasma concentration of theophylline over 20 μg/ml. The consequences of theophylline toxicity include metabolic disturbances (hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, and metabolic acidosis), nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases seizures, cardiac arrhythmia...
متن کاملCitrate confers less filter-induced complement activation and neutrophil degranulation than heparin when used for anticoagulation during continuous venovenous haemofiltration in critically ill patients
BACKGROUND During continuous venovenous haemofiltration (CVVH), regional anticoagulation with citrate may be superior to heparin in terms of biocompatibility, since heparin as opposed to citrate may activate complement (reflected by circulating C5a) and induce neutrophil degranulation in the filter and myeloperoxidase (MPO) release from endothelium. METHODS No anticoagulation (n = 13), unfrac...
متن کاملApplication of endotoxin and cytokine adsorption haemofilter in septic acute kidney injury due to Gram-negative bacterial infection.
OBJECTIVE Endotoxins and cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of multi-organ failure and mortality in patients suffering from severe Gram-negative bacterial infection. The aim of this study was to determine whether in patients with such infections, use of a haemofilter with enhanced endotoxin haemoadsorption and cytokine removal properties helps to overcome organ dysfunction. ...
متن کاملRecently published papers: Delivery, volume and outcome – what is best for our patient?
Many studies have demonstrated that prompt appropriate treatment for the critically ill patient improves outcome. Moving patients to the best place for instituting care, however, is not always associated with improved outcome. Recent studies on delivering patients to the best place for treatment as well as further work on the effects of volume are discussed. Finally, a large retrospective cohor...
